FAQ
The questions we get asked.
SupaDupa is a macOS menu bar app that finds duplicate files, organizes messy folders, and searches every drive you own, including drives you haven't plugged in for months. Your files stay on your Mac.
Creative knowledge workers (photographers, video editors, designers) with years of files scattered across external hard drives. If you have camera dumps, near-identical exports, and old project drives you're afraid to open, you're the target.
Your files stay on your Mac. Period. SupaDupa never uploads file names, contents, scan results, or folder paths. It reads your files only to sort them. What does leave: app updates, license verification, anonymous usage events (which features got used, never what files), a periodic install ping with your Mac's hardware class (CPU type, RAM range, macOS version; never your hostname), and an optional crash report when something breaks. Both usage analytics and crash reports can be turned off in Settings → Privacy. This site uses Plausible for visit counts. No cookies, no tracking. Full details in our privacy policy.
macOS 13 (Ventura) or newer. Apple Silicon strongly recommended: Auto-tag is much faster on M-series. Intel Macs work, just slower for Auto-tag.
$49 once. You get every Pro feature plus a year of updates. After that, the app keeps working forever. You just stop getting new versions. $19/yr extends your update window. Optional. Renew anytime, skip a year, never renew. Your call.
Nothing breaks. The version you have keeps working forever, with every Pro feature unlocked. You'd just stop getting new versions until you renew.
Yes. Your license is tied to your email, not a specific machine. Same key works on your laptop, desktop, and work Mac.
Yes, that's the whole point. Plug in a drive, point SupaDupa at it, and it remembers every file. Search still works on drives you've unplugged, and that memory stays on your Mac.
Yes. Every destructive action (renames, moves, trashing duplicates) has one-click undo. Trashed files go to the macOS Trash, not deleted directly, so you can restore from there too.
Yes. Free covers folder scanning, exact-duplicate detection, search by name and type, and the media browser. Forever, no card. The $49 Pro upgrade adds auto-tagging by photo content, near-duplicate detection, preview-every-move organization, and automatic drive watching.
Here's the latest. SupaDupa updates itself the day a new version ships, so
you're always on it. Nothing to download twice.
v0.5.0
Find anything by what it says or shows — then read, copy, and export it.
Search is faster and smarter. SupaDupa now finds files by what is inside them — the words in a transcript, the text in a screenshot, the tags on a photo — with partial words and best matches ranked first. Type 'rece' and your receipts come up.
Your transcripts are now something you can use. Open a transcript for any recording, copy it, or export it as a subtitle or text file. Videos get transcribed too, not just audio, and SupaDupa checks the language on the first run so a non-English recording no longer comes out as gibberish.
Have SupaDupa read a file's preview aloud. Turn on Spoken previews to hear a short summary of a file without opening it, and pick the voice and speed in Settings.
Cleaner, clearer, and calmer. A refreshed dark mode, tidier icons and animations, an honest per-file preview of exactly which tags will be written before anything touches your files, and a new Devices panel so you can see and manage the Macs on your license.
